Drugs for Legionnaires disease

Posted by Admin - 03/02/2016

As a Landlord you have legal responsibilities to keep your property safe and free from health hazards.  This includes the potentially fatal form of Pneumonia called Legionnaires Disease.  The disease is caused by inhaling droplets of contaminated water containing Legionella.

It is important that you assess the risk from exposure to Legionella to ensure the safety of your tenants.

Implementing simple control measures will ensure the risk remains low.  For most domestic hot and cold water systems temperature is the most reliable way of ensuring exposure to the Legionella bacteria is minimised, along with, flushing out the system, avoid debris getting into the system, storing hot water at 60 degrees centigrade and removing any redundant pipework.

This risk can be reduced further by installing combi boilers and electric showers as these do not require water storage.

We recommend reading this HSE guidance sheet for detailed information: http://www.hse.gov.uk/legionnaires/legionella-landlords-responsibilities.htm
