Since the rent a room threshold was raised in the July 2015 budget, according to spareroom.co.uk, almost a quarter of a million homeowners have advertised for lodgers which is a 5.2% increase on the previous year.
Homeowners can now earn £7,500 a year tax-free by letting out spare rooms, which is up from the previous limit of £4,250 since the changes were made in April.
The data also reveals that August – the month following the Chancellor’s Summer Budget announcement – was the busiest since records began in 2007, with 31,109 people placing ads for lodgers.
